Few are the years, even, when one has an opportunity to purchase a large, quality home on Westchester Lagoon for under $1 million. Or at any price. Sometimes long-term residents and their relatives just move from one house to the other, remodeling, adding on and updating along the way. The homes never reach the open market.
Another unusual feature of this home is its age. Less than 10 years old, it is one of the few in this original part of the city that isn't part of the area's original housing stock.
Those of us who live in this neighborhood value the sidewalks, quiet privacy despite being downtown, and the proximity of one of the city's most valued parks and lakes. Home to nesting red-necked grebes, seagulls, shore birds, Arctic terms, there is a regular eruption as they rise to harass the local bald eagles who have a nest across the lagoon from this home.
In the winter Westchester Lagoon is transformed into an ice skating area by the city Parks and Recreation folks. They plow broad skateways all over the lagoon, and large open areas close to shore for hockey and recreational users. Saturday afternoon is something of a block party, with burn barrels and various groups sponsoring hot dogs and refreshments. A local radio station often remotely broadcasts from here on these special days.
As for the home, it is flooded with light from its south-facing orientation. Behind the yard you see from this direction is beautiful landscaping, fencing, and a wide buffer with trees and bushes. Then the bike path (lighted and plowed and groomed in winter for Nordic skiing), and the lagoon.
The home has three levels. The topmost has a wrap-around deck that exploits the view and sun exposure. Huge south-facing windows open from the great room. That area is the kitchen, dining area, family/living room room and reading nook. From this room one is hardly aware of neighbors. That upper level also has a library and guest bath.
The middle level has the master bedroom, its elegant bath, a family room, and the entry foyer.
The lower level is the spa room with hot tub, more bedrooms, utility and storage areas.
Because it is a newer home, the decor is light and bright. As you can see from the photos, virtual tour and video, the accents are light wood. Flooring is all neutral and designed to go well with any decorating scheme. This is not a pretentious home and will fit any imaginable lifestyle and household configuration.
